Is Talkicorn safe for kids?
How Talkicorn handles the microphone, parent control, and children's privacy. A character call, not a social network.
Talkicorn is a speech practice friend for educational play at home. It does not diagnose, treat, cure, or replace a licensed speech-language pathologist. If you have concerns, talk with an SLP or your pediatrician.
Talkicorn is a voice call with a character, for ages about 2 to 10, with a grown-up nearby. It is not a social network, not a chat room with strangers, and not a place where a child creates an account. This page is the plain version of how that is set up. The shorter product page is Safety.
Who your child is talking to
They talk to a friend in the app: Luna the unicorn, Rex the dinosaur, or another character. Pip is written as a child their size, never as an adult. There is no public profile, no friend requests, and no way for another person to message your child inside the call.
The kid path does not browse the web. Friends are not given search tools. They do not open links or read random pages out loud.
What a parent controls
You start the call and you tap End. You can set a nickname, an age, and a few practice words. That setup is stored in this browser so the friend can use it. It is not a child account. Please do not put a last name, address, school, phone number, or photo into the notes.
A parent login, if you create one, is for billing. It is an email and password on this browser. The child is not asked to sign up. Voice minutes for the monthly cap are counted on the device. That counter is not a recording of the conversation.
We write the product with children's privacy in mind: a parent is in charge, the child is not asked for contact details, and the app is not an ad network. That is a design choice. It is not a certification badge, and it is not a promise that every browser speech service behaves the same way.
Where the microphone audio goes
The microphone is on for the call and stops when you tap End or leave the page. You can also revoke microphone permission in the browser.
If an xAI key is configured, the live call uses Grok to listen and the Eve voice to speak. Audio for that call goes to xAI. The secret key stays on the server. The child path still has no web search.
Without that key, you hear the browser's demo voice, and the call says so. Chrome's speech recognition may send audio to Google. That is the browser's speech service, not a Talkicorn upload. If that is not acceptable, use the type box, or skip the microphone.
Safari's recognition may run more on the device, depending on the system version. Families who care about this difference should choose the browser deliberately.
What to do if something feels off
End the call. If your child says something that worries you — being hurt, a scary secret — talk with a grown-up they trust and, if needed, a professional. The friend is written to point a child toward a trusted adult. It cannot help in an emergency.
Talkicorn is educational play. It does not diagnose, treat, or replace a speech-language pathologist. Safety of the call and questions about your child's speech are both parent decisions. One of them is about the product. The other belongs with your pediatrician or an SLP.
